Sturgeon Moon

Sunday, August 26th

The full moon that appears in August is called the Sturgeon Moon. North American fishing tribes called August’s full moon the sturgeon moon since the species was abundant during this month, especially in the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water.

The Sturgeon Moon of August is sometimes referred to as the the Red Moon because, as the Moon rises in August, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. August’s full moon has also been called the Green Corn Moon and the Grain Moon.
