Ilex glabra Gem Box® is a recent dwarf cultivar of inkberry holly produced by Proven Winners. Low growing, evergreen, and more resembling a boxwood than an inkberry, Gem Box® is an excellent native alternative to non-native boxwoods, with a great deal more aesthetic and ecological appeal. Dense, ball-shaped, and growing to a mature size of only two to three feet tall and wide, Gem Box® inkberry has small, glossy, dark green leaves that are tinged with red in early spring, before maturing to full, dark green for the summer and fall.

Gem Box® grows best in full to part-sun conditions and medium to wet, well drained soils with some acidity. Perfect for low hedges and container plantings, Gem Box® holly has all the appeal of boxwood with the added benefit of small white flowers in the spring that attract important pollinators; Gem Box® is a female variety that also develops beautiful, inky-black berries when a male 'Squeeze Box' holly is planted nearby.
