Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop' is an excellent dark-leaved cultivar of bugleweed, an evergreen perennial renowned for its vivid cobalt-blue flowers that bloom from early spring to mid summer; the 'Black Scallop' cultivar differs from other Ajuga by its deep purple, nearly black foliage and its large leaves with scalloped edges.
Ajuga typically grows to 4-6" tall, and thrives in full sun to part shade as well and a variety of soil types when provided with adequate water. 'Black Scallop' is valued as a highly ornamental but very low-maintenance, weed-suppressing groundcover that makes for an attractive and colorful underplanting or weed control choice throughout the year, with the added benefit of resistance to foot traffic, making it an excellent lawn alternative in dappled shade where typical turfgrass may not fare as well.
